Unlocking the Secrets of mRNA: A Breakthrough in Personalized Medicine

Now, scientists at the Broad Institute and MIT have developed a new way to easily create customized messenger RNA (mRNA) molecules that are much more effective than existing methods. Scientists have invented a transformative RNA tool called LEGO (Lego-Agglomerates ON), which can essentially piece together gene materials in an effort to increase protein production while simultaneously reducing unwanted—often toxic. side effects.

New approach may yield modified messenger RNAs for treating a wide range of conditions

Unlocking mRNA’s Potential

The COVID — 19 pandemic has however, been a game changer for the field of mRNA technology exhibiting its life-saving quality. But mRNA is far larger than vaccines.

Researchers have been working overtime trying to take advantage of this known versatility of mRNA, finding new ways it can be used in medicine  from cancer immunotherapy and gene editing technologies. The key is that we figure out how to turbo-charge the mRNA for a particular therapeutic benefit, so it works as desired and gives rise to little in the way of detrimental side effects.

Story.slug — LEGO: A Modular Approach to mRNA Optimization

Now, Xiao Wang and a team of researchers at the Broad Institute and MIT have developed what is essentially a chemical “Lego kit” for modifying mRNA structure so scientists can control exactly how each mRNA interacts with the cellular machinery that translates it into protein.

The approach decouples multiple regions of the mRNA, including its cap and tail, allowing researchers to dial these regions up or down in order to install different therapeutic outputs. This allows the researchers to tune mRNA stability, translation efficiency, and protein yield by incorporating different combinations of chemical modifications.

One of the best aspects of LEGO is its versatility. This makes it useful for designing mRNA drugs able to rapidly generate very high levels of protein, or alternatively, achieve a sustained and gradual production of the desired protein — such as those needed for different disorders.

Conclusion

The breakthrough from scientists at the Broad Institute and MIT is an important advancement for mRNA-based therapies. Their work led to the creation of the LEGO system, providing a powerful approach that can be used to unleash the full potential of mRNA as an incredibly versatile and highly personalized therapeutic platform. It will have a direct implication in the treatment of not only cancer but also rare genetic disorders and many other diseases by clearing our roadmap to personalized medical approach.
