Harnessing Nature’s Power

A team of bioengineers at UC Berkeley has reported on a new adhesive that simply never gets stuck, no matter what is thrown at it. A find such as this could play a key role in helping other industries work towards a greener future.

Versatility and Performance

These new polymers span a range of adhesive properties not available with other products, thanks to the research team’s unique contributions.

This is achieved by creating a pressure-sensitive adhesive with 10x the peel strength of conventional adhesives. Boasting excellent strength in both wet and dry conditions, it was the perfect adhesive for many purposes.

These adhesives also have utility far beyond that. They discovered that the αLA-based bonded wood, metal and even medical tissues very effectively. The versatility of an adhesive solution that works in multiple industries is a gamed changer — this ensures fewer specialized and potentially harmful products are being used.

Furthermore, the self-healing attributes of a lot of new adhesives will be perfect for exactly where bonding abilities will have to endure continued strain and often come in contact with small crevices.

Conclusion

The versatility and performance of the adhesives developed by the bioengineers at UC Berkeley represent a major advancement in sustainable materials. From recyclability to versatility, the ability of these new adhesive polymers to be repurposed is considerable and offers a wide range of potential applications that could change the face of industries while benefiting the environment with sustainable techniques. With the demand for green solutions increasing, such innovations are likely to help improve the impact and solve some of those immediate environmental concerns.
