Researchers have made a surprising discovery that one species of comb jelly, Mnemiopsis leidyi, can fuse together after sustaining an injury. This remarkable ability allows two individuals to seamlessly merge their nervous systems, digestive tracts, and even synchronize their muscle contractions, becoming a single entity. This finding challenges our understanding of allorecognition, the ability to distinguish self from others, and could have implications for regenerative research.

The Fusion Phenomenon: A Remarkable Survival Strategy

In a remarkable discovery, researchers have found that the comb jelly species Mnemiopsis leidyi has the ability to fuse together after sustaining an injury. This process is astonishingly rapid, with two individuals merging into one within a single night.

The researchers made this observation while studying a population of comb jellies in a seawater tank in the lab. They noticed an unusually large individual that appeared to have two backends and two sensory structures, known as apical organs. Intrigued, the researchers decided to investigate further by removing partial lobes from other individuals and placing them close together in pairs. To their amazement, nine out of ten times, the injured individuals fused, surviving for at least three weeks as a single entity.

Seamless Integration: Nervous System and Digestive Tract Fusion

The fusion process of the comb jellies is truly remarkable. Once the two individuals have merged, their nervous systems and digestive tracts also seamlessly integrate. Researchers observed that when they poked one lobe of the fused comb jelly, the entire body reacted with a synchronized muscle contraction, suggesting that the nervous systems had fully fused.

The researchers also examined the digestive tract and found that it had also merged. When one of the mouths ingested fluorescently labeled brine shrimp, the food particles traveled through the fused canal, and the waste products were eventually expelled from both anuses, although not at the same time. This remarkable integration of the digestive systems highlights the extraordinary adaptability of these comb jellies.

The discovery of the comb jelly’s fusion ability raises intriguing questions about the underlying mechanisms and their potential implications for regenerative research. The researchers suggest that this fusion process may be related to the lack of an allorecognition system, the ability to distinguish between self and others.
