Researchers at Guizhou University have discovered a groundbreaking method to transform the underutilized byproduct lignin into a high-performance sunscreen ingredient. This eco-friendly innovation not only tackles the issue of lignin waste but also offers a natural and sustainable alternative to synthetic UV-blocking agents. With its robust UV-absorbing and antioxidant properties, this lignin-based sunscreen could revolutionize the skincare industry, promoting healthier and more environmentally conscious choices for consumers. Lignin, a complex organic polymer, has long been a challenge for the paper-making and biorefining industries, often discarded or burned due to its intricate molecular structure. The process involves a transesterification reaction between 3,4-dihydrocoumarin (DHC) and the aliphatic hydroxyls in lignin, resulting in a lignin-3-(2-hydroxyphenyl)propionate ester (LPPE) derivative. This innovative approach significantly increases the number of phenolic hydroxyl groups in the molecule, which are responsible for its enhanced UV-absorbing and antioxidant capabilities.

The study’s findings are truly impressive, with the LPPE demonstrating up to 90% free radical scavenging activity within just 20 minutes when used at a concentration of 5 mg/mL. Moreover, when incorporated into a sunscreen cream at a 5% dosage, the LPPE achieved a remarkable Sun Protection Factor (SPF) value of 40.9, showcasing its remarkable potential for sunscreen applications.
