The Growing Popularity of Coffee

Globally, and in the case of India in particular, coffee has become ubiquitous as the average daily intake of coffee is increasing. While coffee is mainly known as an energy-booster, this drink also has several health benefits.

Global coffee consumption is roughly around 10 billion kilograms according to the International Coffee Organization ICO. That comprises a daily average of 2.25 billion cups consumed and about 815 billion cups consumed in a year. Europe wins the race, accounting for nearly 30 % of the world coffee consumption rate, with Finland being the highest, per capita.North America, and more so the United States rank quite high too, as many as over 400 million cups of coffee per day are consumed in America. Additionally, countries in Asia-the like of India, are also catching up with coffee consumption mainly due to urbanization, changing of lifestyles, and the rise of café culture.

India has altered its preference when it comes to satisfying its caffeine craving and instead of tea as it used to do in the past, it goes for coffee. The Coffee Board of India claims that internal coffee consumption has been increasing at the rate of 5-6 percent per year as, in the case of growth in cafe culture among, particularly, the youth. ‘India has always been one of the coffee growing countries and even now southern states of Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and North Eastern states contribute around 3-4 percent of world coffee production’. The stockholm syndrome inflicted deep on people who were hooked on coffee house experience pioneering the Indian coffee house was when Café Coffee Day ushered in this modern age. Similarly, Starbucks, Barista, and then the series of cafes that went afterwards took this idea of drinking coffee for the sake of socializing yet higher than before. This coffee culture is more than 3,000 crore (around 400 million dollars at the time) a year in 2023 and is still anticipated to have great growth, as today’s young urban Indians are getting more and more into this.

Conclusion

It can be concluded from the research that coffee when taken in moderation has other health benefits apart from its effectiveness as a stimulant and energy booster. Some of these benefits include reduction of chronic illnesses and the improvements in the neurological functioning of the brain and moods. As coffee becomes more popular with today’s society, especially in fast urbanizing countries such as India, it becomes important to learn how to enjoy it in a healthy way. There’s no reason why coffee cannot be integrated into a mindful, health-orientated daily routine, make it possible to indulge in a popular habit and help to preserve the environment, supporting the development of coffee culture and the establishment of sustainable practices.
