A Wireless Surprise

Though Nintendo has kept mum about future hardware plans, a recent FCC filing hints at what may be in the works. In the filing it describes a “wireless device” that utilizes a 24GHz mmWave sensor, that is a specific type of radar system that can detect objects within close proximity to the device just from its ‘echo’.

This implies the device could function as an on-off switch for a console, such as the long rumored Switch 2, as you draw near it. At the very least, the sensor could in theory provide for gesture recognition, making this console even easier to control in an intuitive way. Yes, though the filing also says it doesn’t support Bluetooth, so it’s probably not a wireless controller of some sort. The lower WiFi range also means that it may be using higher power hardware in order to achieve a good connection.

Speculating on Possibilities

Given the data found in this FCC filing, there are a number of possible options for what that mysterious device could be. It could be a new accessory for the Switch 2, maybe a docking station or something that lets you connect the console wirelessly to your TV. Essentially, it would be like the Wii U’s GamePad in reverse, so that you could easily switch from handheld to TV without physically docking the console.

It could also be its own peripheral, not necessarily related to the Switch 2 at all. This could come in the form of a completely new input method or a way to expand gaming beyond what it is today. Nintendo has always been creative with the ways people play video games, so this device could offer an interesting look into where they see their hardware coming.

Whatever this new hardware ultimately is for, the news that Nintendo has something in the works aside from a Switch 2 remains an interesting development. This hints at the fact that the Company is searching for methods to further expand and develop its gaming experiences, possibly offering new unique experiences and features that may differentiate it from any competition in this industry.

Conclusion

A new hardware filing with the FCC from Nintendo is stoking the fires of speculation about what the company could have up its sleeve next. The specifics are few and far between, but it’s evident Nintendo continues to seek new hoodoo magicks for enhancing gameplay above the inevitable Switch-next. While fans are looking forward to the Switch 2, this new device may hint at even more exciting developments from the Japanese gaming giant.
