As climate change intensifies, severe urban flooding has become a pressing issue in Korea. Researchers have developed an innovative approach to enhance the drainage capacity of deep stormwater tunnels, which play a crucial role in mitigating this problem. Using advanced 3D numerical simulations, the study challenges the prevailing belief that larger tunnel diameters inherently offer superior drainage, revealing that smaller diameters can actually improve performance. By minimizing trapped air pockets and stabilizing the flow more quickly, these findings could revolutionize the design of deep stormwater tunnels and help cities like Seoul better prepare for the increasing threat of extreme weather events. Stormwater management, urban flooding, and climate change adaptation are crucial topics at the forefront of scientific research.
