The article delves into the remarkable upgrades being made to CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC), known as the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). It highlights the innovative cold powering system that has been successfully installed, which uses novel superconducting materials to transport high currents across a wide range of temperatures. This upgrade aims to boost the particle collision rate and data collection, enabling further groundbreaking discoveries in particle physics. Large Hadron Collider, Particle Physics

Confining the LHC at its Bounds: The Update to the HL-LHC

The High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) is a major upgrade to the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, designed to fully utilize its potential for studies of Higgins and new physics. This is a major ambitious step in answering one of the most enduring questions about the basic truth of our Universe.

The inner triplets are beam-focusing magnets that lie on either side of the interaction points where beams collide at the ATLAS and CMS experiments, making them critical to this upgrade. These magnets will function at temperatures as low as 1.9 Kelvin or even colder than deep outer space, and the cool powering technology required to move destined currents.

This network includes a 120 kA specially designed transmission line able to carry high currents across the temperature range of the power converters at room temperature down to superconducting magnets at 1.9 K.

Maneuvering this 5-metric-ton complex system was a careful process of integration and assembly, as well as significant risk analysis, simulation, and real-life testing campaigns. The CERN transport team was key to the success of this highly complex installation, giving a sense of precision and cooperation necessary to turn one-of-a-kind technology into reality.

Preparing for the HL-LHC Next Era

The installation of the cold powering system in the HL-LHC IT String test stand represents a major accomplishment for this game-changing upgrade. The work on the various elements of the cold powering system has been almost a decade in the making, revealing CERN’s readiness to innovate and transcend existing paradigms in particle physics.

To provide an integrated test of all systems operating in the underground configuration of the LHC, we will use the IT String test stand as validated for this purpose, including beam-focusing magnets and associated technologies. This key test phase is aimed at reducing the time required to install these large components of the LHC, sounding out interventions if needed as well as characterizing their collective behavior, all with an eye on having the accelerator ready for further breakthrough physics when it switches on.
