This unique characteristic poses a significant challenge for pollination, as the pollen from the male flowers must be transferred to the female flowers for successful fruit development. Unlike many other flowering plants, kiwifruit flowers lack a key attractant for pollinators: nectar. As a result, natural pollination by wind and insects is often inefficient, leading to inconsistent fruit size and quality.</p>
<p><h3>Revolutionizing Pollination with Deep Learning</h3>
<p>To address these challenges, the research team set out to develop a deep learning-based approach for detecting and classifying kiwifruit flowers by gender. By accurately identifying female flowers, the robotic system can precisely target the stigma to release pollen, while male flowers can be detected to collect pollen for future pollination tasks.</p>
<p>The researchers compiled a comprehensive dataset of over 3,800 images of kiwifruit flowers, carefully annotating each flower as either male or female. They then evaluated the performance of four state-of-the-art deep learning models: <b>YOLOv5</b>, <b>YOLOv8</b>, <b>DETR</b>, and <b>RT-DETR</b>.</p>

<p>The results were impressive, with the DETR model emerging as the top performer, achieving an overall precision of 89%, recall of 97%, F1 score of 93%, and mean Average Precision (mAP) of 94%.
