Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral infection that affects livestock, causing significant economic harm to countries where it is endemic. Researchers in Thailand have evaluated and compared the performance of six commercially available ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) test kits designed to detect antibodies against the non-structural proteins (NSPs) of the FMD virus. This is crucial for differentiating between vaccinated and naturally infected animals, which is essential for disease control and surveillance. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the selection of the most suitable ELISA kit for FMD detection in Thailand and beyond.

Combating the Spread of FMD

Foot and mouth disease is a major global concern, particularly in regions where the virus is endemic, such as Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. The disease can have devastating economic consequences for countries, as it significantly impacts livestock production and trade. Controlling and preventing the spread of FMD is a top priority for many governments and agricultural authorities.
